For many years I had the pleasure of working at Perfect Potion, an Australian owned and operated company responsible for one of the world’s most respected and purest range of aromatherapy oils. It was here I developed my love for essential oils and natural skincare, actively studying and experiencing for myself the profound healing available through the use of aromatherapy. It was during my time working for Perfect Potion that I found my soul family, like-minded women who honoured the cycles of the moon, who loved to experiment with foods and flavours, who responded to the call of the healing arts. It was here I began to forge my own Alyssum Alchemy path.
I still look back fondly on the many years I worked for Perfect Potion being inspired each day by the beautiful women with whom I worked. One such woman was the lovely Rita Balshaw, Hippies in the City author as well as the Wellness Ambassador for Perfect Potion. I recall when Rita first began collecting her thoughts and researching for her first book. Each day we worked together she’d share some new discovery or the meal she concocted the night before. Rita was overcome with creative passion and it was an honour to witness this process and be a sounding board for her ideas. Now she's published her third book and I'm delighted to share some of her story with you today.
I first had the pleasure of meeting Danielle a few years ago. We met over coffee having been 'insta-duced' by a mutual friend. We chatted all things luna lovely and found we had a joint passion. A calling to help women live an empowered and joyful life by being fully present through self care, ritual and connection with nature's cycles, be it the seasonal wheel, the waxing and waning of mother moon or our own bodily ebbing and flowing.
Danielle practises a unique form of Mayan Abdominal Therapy and supports women across the UK and Australia. Through her hands on clinic sessions as well as workshops and other resources and tools, Danielle helps her clients and customers to get back in touch with their menstrual cycles and luna loveliness. I'm delighted to be sharing her story with you.
How long have you been practising as an Abdominal Therapist?
I qualified in The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy® nearly a decade ago following studies and training with Dr Rosita Arvigo herself.
What was it about the industry that first attracted you?
I had suffered from abdominal health issues since I was teenager which only became exasperated when I started my periods. I finally took charge of my health in 2003 when I decided to study Nutritional Therapy at ACNT in Sydney.
How has the industry changed since you first began this journey?
The wellness industry as a whole has a very different landscape compared to when I started out. There is a wealth of information now readily available via the internet and it is becoming even more important to ensure you are tapped into good resources as there is a lot of ‘noise’ out there. Social media has become a predominant and popular source for wellness information and inspiration. I would always advise people to ‘go with their gut’ when choosing who to align themselves with for guidance and advice whether that be within the medical world or the natural therapy world. Combine this with some good ol’ fashion research or study if there is a particular health issue or area of wellness you are interested in and you will have a pretty good foundation to build on.
How have you changed since you first began this journey?
I have been gently and sometimes not so gently encouraged to look at the root cause of any imbalance I may feel in my mind and body by supporting the heart and soul which are often the more deeply wounded aspects of myself that have then manifested as a physical health issue. As a health practitioner this is an integral part of any client session, the acknowledgement that as human beings we are the custodians of a unique mind, body and spirit which all need to be loved, honoured and cherished in equal measure. Sessions often highlight which one of these needs more focus and offers and shares ways into how this may look in your day to day life. This can often be the missing piece of the health puzzle and often sees clients begin to see symptoms shift and diminish and/or health challenges become less of a challenge as life takes on a new and vibrant energy and outlook.
What makes your services unique?
I have created a unique fusion of all the modalities I am trained and qualified in that have assisted and supported me over the years as it is important for me to practice with authenticity when it comes to addressing the underlying causes of health issues. I have then been able to hand on heart (or rather belly!) share these healing experiences with clients who come to see me with similar health issues or indeed any issues effecting the happy and healthy functioning of the digestive and reproductive systems and their associated organs.
Tell us about Living the Luna Life?
Living the Luna Life™ was created in response to a growing number of my clients, colleagues and friends asking for ways to better connect and understand the more feminine aspects of themselves in practical tangible ways. This has led to the creation of three core products that offer a subtle yet powerful reminder as to where one is within their menstrual month and to check in and make sure that what we have planned in our day to day, week to week is in alignment to the changing needs of mind, body and spirit within each 4 key phases of our menstrual cycle.
Tell us about your newly launched Monthly Planner? How does it work and what do you hope people will gain from using it?
I have been working on a template for the monthly planner for a couple of years following further studies in menstrual cycle awareness. In clinic it would make me smile when I would ask clients where they were in their cycle and without fail most would dive into their handbag and pull out the phone, swipe, tap and open an app that would know more about their body than they do! I am happy to say that many of these women now own a planner which rather than having the fingers tied up all the time in swiping, clicking and tapping, hands and fingers are being used in much more creative ways that are free from technology creating time and space to connect to their own natural rhythms and express that through more natural processes such as working with the planner in delightfully imaginative ways. Less screen time hopefully equates to more real connection with natural resources and actual humans.
It is proving to be a handy tool to get you started in forging a more supportive relationship with your cycle teaching you how to get the best out of mind, body and spirit during each of the 4 key phases. It is also a popular addition for those looking for new and fun ways to practice self care. My hope is that menstrual self care becomes more and more a part of the day to day ritual as much as cleaning your teeth or taking a shower. The planner allows us to easily make the changes necessary by gently reminding us of the most supportive self care practices applicable that day of your cycle. The creative process for Living the Luna Life has been fantastic as has the research and time taken to find materials that align with Living the Luna Life’s ethical, environmental and sustainable approach to product development and collaborations.
What is your favourite self care ritual (in your own personal life)?
I love to witness and engage with the seasons on the outside so that I may follow their cues when they occur within the seasons of my own menstrual cycle. My self care is very much aligned with living in a seasonal way honouring the changing needs of mind, body, heart and soul as I move through my menstrual month.
What does the word 'sacred' mean to you?
Sacred represents to me the need to honour and cherish something that resonates deeply with your soul. It can be a particular time or a particular place that requires your total presence, focus and energy.
Why do you think self care is so important?
Because no one else will do it for you! ;-)
Why do you think people are feeling the need to simplify and ritualise their daily routines?
Life today is lived at a rate we can no longer keep up with. By simplifying and having little rituals means that we have to pause, stop, take a breath, take a moment.
What is your favourite Alyssum Alchemy product and why?
I absolutely love the Sacred Space Meditation Mist. I use it in my office space at the start and end of my day and also to clear and re-energise the space between client sessions.
What do you think 2019 holds for you and your offerings?
2019 is going to be a big year in the sense that people are going to actually get to use the Living the Luna Life™ products and hopefully make them an integral part of their ongoing approach to self care or provide those new to the idea of self care with the inspiration to begin a self care practice. Education will play a major role so that women feel informed, inspired and empowered with wonderful ripple effects not just into their personal lives but spilling out into their local community and global communities as we continue to understand ourselves and each other on a deeper level.
How can we stay in touch and how can we find out more?
You can start living a luna life straight away by joining this moonlit movement with a growing number of luna lovelies connected in online via the website www.livingthelunalife.com / Instagram @living_the_luna_life / New Moon Mail subscription or my preferred option of connecting with others via the ‘offline life’ at one of Living the Luna Life’s workshops or retreats that are being organised in both Australia and UK. Newcastle based Ruby Marsh is a woman who knows what she wants, and isn't afraid to ask for it. She's one of those highly motivated, 'make it happen' people, a handy soul to have in one's orbit, as being around one so driven and enthusiastic will inspire and get the 'creativity cogs' turning. In fact she has made it her mission to help others pursue their dreams with her coaching services. And I'm super excited to share Ruby's story with you today and to be co-hosting a workshop with her in a couple of weeks!
What prompted you to pursue as career as a Life Coach?
Firstly, a deep level of self-awareness is critical as a coach. Knowing that you can overcome your own mind at any stage in your life is part of the practice. Unfortunately, I only saw this through the pain of a weak immune system and anxiety I had been experiencing in my late 20s. My mind and body were not equipped with the tools or awareness to deal with stress.
Part of my response was a radical exit from full-time Architecture at 30. I began working on the retail floor of a lululemon store and threw myself into every opportunity to cultivate this self-awareness, train, coach and eventually lead a team. Practising on my own as a coach was the next evolution but that didn’t come till my mid-30’s.
What was it about the industry that first attracted you?
I’d long admired a few other coaches in the industry - especially those that had a very distinct voice. Eventually, I got out of my own way and thought “who could I serve and what is the change they seek?”
How has the industry changed since you first began this journey?
The coaching industry (like the wellness industry as a whole) have boomed in recent years. Finding your sweet spot is critical, as is taking a long-game approach. It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the noise, which is often why we don’t start or we burn out too quickly.
A couple of years before starting coaching, I served my audience through a blog with my best friend called “A Conscious Beauty”. This was a great platform to test ideas, collaborate and build relationships without any risk. This “ship it” mentality allowed me to let go of a lot of a lot of fear and work out who I wanted to serve. You can always start somewhere.
How have you changed since you first began this journey?
The beginning of this journey, was the first time since leaving high school that I’d made a career choice out of intuition. Sometimes, intuition isn’t logical, it’s a quiet nudge from the universe to follow something that feelsright rather than looksright.
Once I’d decided it was my next career, I threw myself in it, adopting the “start before you’re ready” model - thanks to Marie Forleo’s B School training. The challenges only get bigger as you nudge the edges of your comfort zone. I’m now collaborating with my husband, so between the two of us, there’s opportunity to scale which is fun and requires you to look at things differently.
What makes your services unique?
I’m able to relate to the corporate woman who wants to lead and the budding yoga teacher wanting to start her studio - because I’ve been her. But in my eyes any impact we seek to make, all begins with self-leadership: mental clarity and self awareness. With this as my foundation, my approach is about steady action, and if need be I’ll call you out when fear is leading you off track - but only because I love you.
What is your favourite self care ritual (in your own personal life)?
I’d have to say right now, an ocean swim is the best thing to break up your workday. I also love blending essential oils and baths in winter are my meditation.
What does the word 'sacred' mean to you?
Sacred is holding something close to your heart. It will be different for every person. Something is sacred when you are unwavering in your boundaries around this practice or thing.
Why do you think self care is so important?
Self care is important because it allows us to cultivate energy. In this age it is more often going out than in. It’s a practice that takes practice, but what I’ve observed in myself and those women I work with, when self care is a priority we deepen trust in ourselves and we’re less resentful or reactive.
Why do you think people are feeling the need to simplify and ritualise their daily routines?
In a world where we’ve got more inputs, opportunities to be distracted and overwhelmed than ever, we’re craving simplicity. We crave intimacy with ourselves, we want to be loved and nourished.
What is your favourite Alyssum Alchemy product and why?
The first time I sprayed the Sacred Space Meditation Mist I was in love. It is the perfect scent to ground and focus, bring the senses into your stillness practice without overpowering the fact you’re there to simply breathe.
What’s do you think 2019 holds for you and your offerings?
As I alluded to above, this year I’m merging my one to one work with my husband through our Access Potential Academy. It’s a unique peer-to-peer group and 1:1 program that focuses on those who want to become a stronger leader. It feels like the next evolution for my work so I’m totally pumped! My word for this year is community, and now living in a new city I have a whole new opportunity to expand. I’ve got some truly wonderful collaborations coming, including our Living in Harmony Workshop!

How long have you been practising as a therapist?
I started in the industry when I was 17, and became a qualified therapist at 19, so that's 20 + years ( how quickly time flys!)
What was it about the industry that first attracted you?
I LOVED touching people, I would massage my sisters, stroke my mothers friends hair. I enjoyed making people feel incredible and knew my hands were helping people to do that. I had started out studying social work, but after 6 months, I quit and enrolled into beauty.
How has the industry changed since you first began this journey?
So much. Originally there was really only space for your traditional beauty therapists ( waxing, brows, pedicures) and only a select few brands that ruled the show. In the last 10 years, we have seen that shift with people specialising in each area ( ie myself as a facilaist ) and becoming experts in their craft. Holistic beauty has become more well known, as we become more educated on treating a persons 'whole' self, and the organic products and the science behind them...well, as you know, they are getting better results for our clients than ever before.
How long have you been running your own business?
I left traditional beauty in 2013, and slowly built my business. I started with $1000 and a spare room, I created Kindred toxin free 2 years later ( It took me that long to really become toxin free in all areas of my life and it's an ongoing process) It's a business that evolves each year, she has a soul of her own, and now I just follow.
Why do you choose to only use and support support ethical, transparent and conscious brands?
For me, understanding how/why/where a product is created and the intention behind is very important. When you come and see me, you are not only feeding into a cycle that helps me support my family, and support my staff, it also gives to the creators of the products I use. It's this beautiful circle that keeps us all connected, creating more , and supporting each other.
What makes your treatments services unique?
We add in ceremony! Using smudging, meditations , crystals and tuning into the clients needs and our own intution is what makes our facial rituals so unique. I created each ritual myself, combing everything that I love. I also am not tied to one brand, I hand pick from all different brands, and use exactly what suits your skins needs.
You were originally a sole practitioner now you have two staff. As your business and your role within in evolves through this unfolding of growth what has been your biggest lesson or take away or what has supported you the most as you navigate new territory?
KIND Beauty is the ethos at KINDRED TOXIN FREE face and body.
What is your favourite self care ritual (in your own personal life)?
BATHING , and floating. That time to myself is essential.
Why do you think self care is so important?
For me, I see it as a responsibity and a duty to my clients, and to the people around me. To show up as my best me ( even when, and yes it does, Life get's crazy, to have your self care as a priority is a must!) They are coming, giving of themselves to me ( in the form of their hard earned money) and I want to be able to give from a place that is grounded, nurturing and calm. When I take care of myself and put myself first, this is effortless...
What does the word 'sacred' mean to you?
For me, it's tapping into the divine, to ground in and to trust in whatever is given to me, to practice from a place of love and intuition. I love ceremony and incorporate it into my everyday ( at home and at work) for this reason.
What is your favourite Alyssum Alchemy product and why?
I LOVE them all, can I have two ? The Rose Radiance Face Mist ( because reiki and roses!) and Sacred Sunlight Body Mist. I adore Sacred Sunlight, it was my first gift to Lily as a part of something very special to me, and recently created a facial around it ( using citrine) to share with our spring reset group.
What's next for Kindred Toxin Free Facials and the Kind Beauty Movement?
They have souls of their own, who knows... so long as I tune in and stay true to our message anything is possible.
Gold Coast based intentional jewellery line YCL made its debut on the jewellery scene five years ago, and is now a globally recognised award-winning jewellery brand producing delicate, ethically made pieces which celebrate femininity and minimalism. Fabienne is a self taught artisanal jeweller and designer and last year was named one of Business News Australia’s top Entrepreneurs on the Gold Coast under 40.
Why do you think more and more people are feeling called to support ethical, transparent and conscious brands?
I believe people are called more towards this as we are becoming more mindful of the impact we are having on this earth and are concerned about our future and our children’s future. It is such an important time for our planet and it to us it is vital that we are open and honest with our customers on our journey towards becoming even more sustainable. We love seeing this wave of consciousness grow not only within our YCL Community, but within society.
Tell us a bit about conscious.kin. When did you start your business and why?
We are a natural beauty & wellness business that seeks out, curates and supports brands that align with our vision to guide and empower each person to discover conscious beauty. Conscious Beauty to us reflects both from the inside and out. It in the choices we make as individuals and in the way we operate our business. Conscious Beauty includes purity of ingredients, compassion, sustainability and environmentally focussed.
The brands we choose to work with are natural and organic, and they are also cruelty free, transparent and effective. We abide by and have always guided ourselves and the brands we support by the Real Beauty Manifesto.
My sisters and I started our business because honestly, we wanted to be able to make choices about the products we used based on these values but there was none. There were a few of online retailers but we really wanted to give people the opportunity to touch, smell and experience the products before buying them.
Natural beauty and wellness is so important and we wanted to make it accessible to everyone. We wanted to provide a space for people to discover how effective and luxurious natural products have become in a calm and sophisticated environment.
What makes your store unique?
That’s a great question! For us, it has always been so important to create a calm, sophisticated, safe space for people to discover conscious beauty. We modelled our showrooms to meet our community where they are at.
We have our core non-negotiables.. all our products are cruelty-free, 100% transparent, and use clean and sustainably sourced ingredients. From there we really want to give our community the opportunity to make their decisions based on their own values - whether that be supporting local business (which we personally are passionate about), or Vegan, Certified Organic or even just effective skincare into maturity. The options are there and the choice is too.
Our role is to guide and empower each person to discover conscious beauty and we aim to do so from a place of acceptance and education, never ever judgement or exclusion.
Why all natural and organic?
Simply because we, humans, are natural and organic. It does not make any sense to me at all to put anything not natural in or on our bodies… that pretty much sums how I make all the choices surrounding food and products I select for my family and I to use.
What is it like working as sisters? How do you work as a team?
It can be incredibly rewarding and satisfying but it can be challenging as well. Alison, you know all three of us – and I am pretty sure you would agree, each of us are vastly different in our personalities and strengths but our core values are unwavering and that is why it works I think.
I like to describe us as the three corners of the same triangle. The only time when we have ever come to heads is when our communication channels have failed in one way or another… but because we come from a strong base, we have always been able to navigate and build through stronger.
You are also all mums, how do you each balance work as a mums and business women?
Ah!... I am actually typing this answer one handed as I nurse my new baby boy Gabriel who just woke up from his nap!! It is really great that we ALL ARE mums to be fair.. we all understand the shifting priorities of being a mum and owning your own business..
We all have each other back when it comes to balancing work and family life. We take it in turns for the most part for standard things like who is on-call for the team on the weekends all have the best interests of our business front and centre too.. if one of my kids needs me for any reason I always feel supported by Em & Beck to be there for them, because I would (and have) been there in a heartbeat to them and they know that too.
After all, their kids are my family too and we all want our children (and our nieces and nephews) to know their family has their back 100% too. Family dinners are super funny for us, as we all have so many stories we love telling to our nieces and nephews about their mum when they we just kids!!
Why do you think there is so much interest in Australian boutique natural skincare brands at the moment?
Australia has some of the highest standards in the world and our products are extremely popular overseas because of that. I think Australian skincare brands have really set an incredible standard of sophistication, effectiveness and customer experience.
Each of the brands conscious.kin supports create each and every one of their products with deliberate intention and forethought. That transfer of energy comes across in the delivery of the product, and the end user experiences the whole journey when they choose these products. It is an incredible privilege to be part of that process.
You’ve just opened a store on the Gold Coast, tell us about the new space.
Well this showroom is just wonderful!... it is in the Brickworks Centre in Southport right next to The Source Bulk Wholefoods. It is a beautiful space, with a focus on edible / internal beauty as well as wellness and skincare rituals, natural makeup and clean, conscious beauty. We have had such great feedback on this space.. it is such a great healthy minded community down there!..
Why do you think more and more people are feeling called to support ethical, transparent and conscious brands?
I genuinely think that we as a wider community really have to get behind these brands because they are doing business the right way. Every time we make a purchase, we make a choice as to what impact that product cycle has on a wider scale.
We as a community cannot pretend that we have no responsibly for how a product is made. I am thrilled that there is a massive push right now to ban single use plastics, to hold the big businesses to account for their actions and to take responsibly for our place in the supply chain.
When we support ethical, transparent and conscious brands – we stand up for the environment, for animal rights and support the people who are doing the same!
Why do you think self care is so important?
I love the analogy about putting your own oxygen mask on before assisting anyone else.. Our children model themselves from the role models around them – We help mould their opinion of the environment whether they see us throwing rubbish out a car window or if they see us picking up rubbish on the beach.
We help mould their opinion of themselves whether they see us looking in the mirror saying how fat and ugly we are or if they see us giving ourselves a calming lymphatic face massage and taking time and space to centre ourselves in the world. This to me is why my own self care is so important.. I am so aware they my children see everything and I genuinely have to love and respect myself if I have that wish for them
Why do you think people are feeling the need to simplify their lives?
For me, I tend to think the more stuff you have, the more stuff you have to worry about and your possessions end up possessing you. I think our society has just come through a massive cycle of consuming for consuming’s sake.. and now we have come to a point of realisation that ‘things’ cannot make us happy. Yes, we get the instant endorphin release when we buy something new, but it is short lived and in the end does not fill the space inside us that we thought it would… and we are all so busy now, that stuff tends to just make life more complicated – the less stuff you have, the less you have to worry about.
Whenever I look at an item in my life or even before I go to bring it into my life, I usually run through ‘Use, Love, Need’ in my head… Do I use it? Do I love it? Do I need it? If I can’t answer yes to one of those questions, with 100% confidence – then I either donate the item or don’t buy it in the first place..
What does the word 'sacred' mean to you?
Sacred is something we treasure and something we honour. We hold that which is sacred dearly and we look after it.
What are some of your own favourite sacred daily rituals?
I have a little mantra actually! I find that this always centres me, lifts whatever is weighing down on my mind/heard/soul and allows me to continue on with clarity. I made it up and I am happy to share it with you and your community. To be the most effective, it is best to actually visualise as well..
I am just one person, in a big city.
Brisbane is just small city in a big country.
Australia is just a small country on a massive planet.
Earth is just a small planet in our entire Solar System.
Our solar system is just a tiny spec in our galaxy.
The milky way is just one of billions of galaxies in our universe.
Our universe may even just be one tiny spec of endless multiverses.
There. Then I feel better and my problems seem not so big.
What is your favourite Alyssum Alchemy product and why?
Ooo that is a really tough one between the Clarity Remedy Oil and the Rose Radiance Face mist… both I use for entirely different times during my day. I love the Rose Radiance Face Mist because it is a beautiful mist to hydrate my skin but also because it has organic herbal extracts and antioxidants (such as green coffee seed, kakadu plum, green tea and vegetable glycerine) - it acts as a hydrating bond which is perfect for setting makeup.
Then, I have to give honourable mention to the Clarity Remedy Oil as It has and always will be my go to whenever I need to stop, focus and get energy. I have one sitting on my work desk at home and I also have one for my daughter to use when she does her homework to help her if she struggles with the work.

]]>Tell us a bit about The Grounded Way. When did you start your business and why?
The Grounded Way is an evolution of a previous wellness based retreat and workshop business based in North Queensland, The Wellness Collection - it was very pink and very active wear. The Grounded Way is the stripped back, conscious version of that flurry of fun - maybe it is its introverted, feet in the dirt, face to the sun, older sister? The Grounded Way is the way I can express some key part of who I am, what lights me up and how we can make real change and real impact in the world - from artisans to a ‘live and breath’ approach to humans supporting human. We run clean living workshops - from making tea blends to stamping and fermentation - as well as run a shop that stocks products by brilliant women, and products with a story. Definitely a living example of the circular economy rather than the linear single-use/disposable economy!
What was it about learning about and working with whole foods that really resonates with you?
Food is the ultimate connector, the ripple effect of what food is on your plate speaks volumes for the relationship you have with yourself, and your connection to your community and nature! It is the lowest common denominator for a return to the earth, and a return to self - energetically, and nutritionally…but let’s be honest, whole foods can only do so much and it is how and why you use and consume them within the landscape of your life that will create the real change.
Lately it has been made abundantly clear to me that I am quite ‘fadless’ when I come to food, and how much I care about our food systems, and true issues with access to good food across all socioeconomic levels of society - the role of food for nourishment, connection, celebration and community - and not for each ‘new thing’ that comes along. It absolutely has its place, it just isn’t my place, and quite frankly it exhausts me :)
Tell us a bit more about your philosophy around 'doing good'?
Oh gosh it is the cornerstone of how I would love to see a change in the world, it is the perfect salve for healing your own wounds and overcoming your own obstacles in life. It satisfies our need to be useful, it gives glorious perspective to think beyond ourselves, and an opportunity to show up for someone else, as much as to show up for our own ignorances and really really answer the question ‘What kind of world do we want to live in?’. Answering that question on a bigger visionary level, and then thinking small and bringing it to life is a game-changer. The beautiful quote “People power, cause indeed it is the only thing that ever has” is very fitting here.
How do you balance all the different elements of your business?
Honestly, it is driven from a pretty big vision, and it is only just cracking open, so I find that inherently inspiring, a body of work independent of me that I am privileged to try and get out into the world. I am in the midst of learning how much I depended on my health for the vitality to juggle the balls, and push the progress (gently of course) as things have had to slow to a snails pace to honour me so that I have the foundations in place to go forward. I think the majority of the struggle with purposefully slowing down is that I am so darn excited to keep moving - I am resolute that the bubbles of inspiration will be there when my body is at a happy equilibrium.
What does 'wholehearted living' mean to you?
Wholehearted means an honouring the pain as much as the joy, and the growth as much as the stillness. I don’t think it is a search for more and more and more whilst you are seeking what you perceive as ‘whole’ - you are already “it” and playing around with showing up for that more is where the everyday magic lies. The removal of barriers to be more of you more often, and all the delightful learnings and lesson it brings with it.
Why do you think people are feeling the need to simplify their lives?
Because it feels good, for the most part, or at least you know that the pursuit of simplification has really incredible pay-offs. We want time, we want presence and we want a better quality of living - simplifying how we do things does this. They are gifts that money can’t buy. It allows for careful curation of how you want your life to look and feel, for it to be a walking example of what you stand for and the kind of world you want to live amongst. Now, more that ever, the desire to do good that looks after this world in the most sustainable way is driving a different kind of change. From little things to big things we are in quite an amazing time of life!
Why do you think more and more people are looking to take charge of their own wellbeing?
Because self-care sits alongside wholehearted living, and the beauty of living simply. Being in charge, and full owning that space of being in charge of your health and well being, is powerful - the discipline that comes with it is the ultimate act of self-love, and when we start at that interface of ‘me and my health’ is signals the beginning of a beautiful, aligned and purposeful journey.
Why do you think connection is so important in today's society?/ What does connection mean to you?
Connection gives us a sense of being useful, a sense of purpose, and the meaning that weaves all of the other ‘things’ in life together. Connection and everything associated with it is the most gentle, and most considered, way forward. For me, connection is glue - for me, my relationships and the world.
What does the word 'sacred' mean to you?
Sacred to me means untouchable and defendable. It is something to be revered and fought for
What are some of your own favourite sacred daily rituals?
Sunshine and nature are definitely up there - upon waking (or when the sun comes up after waking), spending time sipping some water (with lemon, salt and cayenne) and watching the start of the day makes my heart happy. For me I find that scents and liquids are the key ways that sacred daily rituals are honoured in my day - from your beautiful mediation mist when it is time for me, or lemon and basil oils when it is time to work - I love using drinks and scents to ease the transitions in my day. I love slowing the transition from task to task.
What is your favourite Alyssum Alchemy product and why?
Gosh, the Sacred Space Meditation Mist and Sacred Stardust Dream Mist are in my EVERY DAY. They feel like silk on my skin and make me feel like a freaking goddess. So so in love with those two!
How can we find out more?
You can come and find me on my website at www.thegroundedway.com.au, or on instagram at @the.grounded.way - and say hi! Things will be changing for both of those platforms, just as soon as we get the health and energy sorted, right?!

We are Anna + LJ, sisters and best friends. Love is Your Compass comes from an affirmation that LJ channelled back in 2011, “The World is Small when Love is Your Compass”, this was at a time when we were living on the other side of the world from one another, Anna in the UK and LJ in Australia. The affirmation is about how when you are connected to your heart space and tune in to it, you can move mountains and distance is no obstacle. Whilst we were apart we trusted that "the world is small when love is your compass" and that love knows no distance/time.
In 2013 Anna moved to Melbourne and we were finally in the same physical place to begin our soul work together, it seemed fitting to call ourselves “Love is Your Compass” to honour that original affirmation.
Being together really sparks our soul growth, it’s a huge blessing and incredibly rewarding because we hold up mirrors to one another. We’re both passionate about living a life that resonates fully with our soul purposes, so we embrace the inner work. It’s because of this that we started creating soul medicine tools to support ourselves.
We started Love is Your Compass in 2016 to share the tools we had created to support ourselves with others. We created a simple recipe to remind us how to stay connected to our true selves, whilst still living in the real world, we call this "Heart Centred Living" which became our fundamental philosophy.
All the sacred tools we create are intended to support you through this process to shift your inner world. They are physical tools to support your inward journey.
Our mother is Japanese, so we have grown up with a rich cultural background grounded in practices such as mindfulness, Zen and intentional rituals.
Reiki really resonates for us because it embodies this paradigm of universal oneness, connection with all that is and pure life force energy. Reiki is about embodying the true essence of who you are which is pure love and so you *ARE* reiki wherever you go in the world. It’s such a powerful transformational journey and has really supported us both to cultivate self-love, compassion, presence and forgiveness, which are all the things we human beings need to practice more of, to help free ourselves from the negative and damaging thoughts that don’t really serve us for our highest good.
For us, Heart Centred Living is about bringing the focus back to what is truly important and that is your inner world, because your inner world creates your individual reality.
We believe that we ALL have innate wisdom which means that everything we need to fulfil our own unique soul purposes resides within us.
Practically speaking here’s how we support ourselves to live in a Heart Centred way and connect inwards:
We believe that everybody wants to live a life that aligns with who they truly are and what they truly want. Unfortunately, we currently live in a society where the wisdom of the mind, logic and rational thinking is prized over love, empathy, compassion and emotional feeling. Yet, these things are fundamental to being a healthy, connected and truly fulfilled human being.
In neglecting these valuable aspects of our nature, many of us have forgotten how to connect with ourselves. Despite this, we all do our best to try and thrive in this environment, but it can leave many of us feeling like something is fundamentally missing or that we are off track. As a result, we try to grab little pockets of happiness where we can, often by looking outside of ourselves, but for more and more people this isn’t having the desired effect.
Consequently, we feel that people are awakening to the importance of connecting inwards. People are embracing ritual to bring themselves back to presence, so that their consciousness isn’t constantly thinking about the past or projecting into the future but is present in the moment. Through ritual, we can tune-in and acknowledge the truth of ourselves, our desires and fears and get a true energetic snapshot.
This pervading sense that many people have that we need to go back to basics and simplify our lives, also stems from a rising desire to lessen the external distractions of life to support this journey inwards to connect with self + higher self where the true magic lies.
To us the word “Sacred” means “intentional” and “mindful”. It’s something that you do for yourself or others with 100% presence in the moment, bringing all of your consciousness and love to the practice. This is why even the simple act of skincare can be a sacred practice.
We find that rituals that create sacred moments in everyday life, support us to stay in our heart space.
We feel like this culture of ritual is in our DNA, particularly from our Japanese heritage where there are many beautiful rituals around the seasons, the way of tea “Sado” 茶道, the way of calligraphy “Shodo” 書道 etc. The common theme of all of these Japanese rituals is “Dou” - 道, which is the Japanese word for “path/road/ the way of“. This deliberate emphasis on the journey, the feeling of complete presence in the moment through mindfulness, supports us to remain aware of the sacred and miraculous nature of life. This is so important because it can often get lost in the busyness of modern day life and it is very easy to get caught up in the act of “Do-ing” rather than “Be-ing”.
The Creation Diamond® ritual: We both start our day with our newest sacred tool called The Creation Diamond® (pictured above). We use this daily to consciously set an intention as to what energy we want to bring to our day and then intuitively select a crystal to support that intention. We then safely carry that crystal with us in a sacred vessel that symbolises our Diamond Light Body and honours us as Creator beings.
Skincare ritual: I (LJ) both morning and evening have made my skincare routine into a ritual of self-love and nurturing. After cleansing my skin, I use my Alyssum Alchemy Rose Radiance Face Mist and Rose Radiance Nectar with my Rose Quartz roller to mindfully nourish and love the skin I am in. I imagine the love soaking into my skin and this is part of a big healing journey for me of loving my body.
Shower ritual: I (Anna) use my morning shower as a ritual where I write a word or intention on the steamed-up shower glass. I focus all my consciousness and presence on that intention/word whilst I stand under the warm water to tune-in and hold that vibration within every cell of my body. It’s a simple ritual but something I find very powerful.
To be honest, we love them all! We absolutely love the Divine Dew Drops Radiance Oil because it feels like the ULTIMATE self-love, unconditional love alchemy. It smells divine with its infusions of vanilla and calendula and is SO healing for all skin types. We love that it is enhanced with carefully selected gem and flower essences which support the heart chakra beautifully.

I have the honour of connecting and working with some incredible souls through the work that I do. I have wanted to share their stories with you for some time, and now the time feels right. I’m being called to share this space with people who have made an impact on me with their integrity, passion and soul-led purpose and I hope their stories will inspire you too...
Meet Belinda Yates:
Belinda Yates is a Holistic Facialist & Health and Wellness Coach who has been working within the skincare and beauty industry for many years. Belinda is passionate about integrating whole body wellness with skin health and self care. Belinda not only nurtures her clients with incredible facials which utilise natural and organic skincare, she also guides them toward achieving their own health and wellness goals to ensure a healthy glow inside and out. She also has a special Mother’s Day treatment offer for Sydney siders, so read on to find out more:
Why do you think people are feeling the need to simplify and ritualise their daily routines?
I think people of today are so busy and time poor, exhausted trying to get through their day, suffering stress and overwhelm. Caught up in the doing rather then the being…People are feeling the need to slow down and simplify in the hope of bringing more conscious presence, stillness and balance into their life.
How has the industry changed since you first began this journey?
I studied beauty therapy and aromatherapy back in 1994, and when I first began it was very much about traditional beauty treatments, facials, waxing, manicures and makeup. In the mid 90’s the modern Spa era emerged which introduced wellness for the beauty industry, where treatments became part of an ‘experience’ for clients, caring for the body, mind and spirit.
Today we are seeing more therapists taking a holistic approach, as we continue to learn and understand that beauty is more than skin deep and that treating the whole person is key, ultimately its all connected. We are also more aware of our health, nutrition and what we put on the skin, so the use of natural and organic skincare and skin health education is on the rise.
What makes your treatments unique?
I help clients to nourish their bodies and nurture their souls, inspiring them to truly honour and look after themselves from the inside out. My healing haven is a nurturing space, where clients are able to completely let go, connect with themselves and deeply relax. I offer beautiful relaxing facial rituals using the most divine natural organic skincare (including brands such as Alyssum Alchemy), incorporating essential oils, crystal infused mists, sage, and long massage with beautiful music, singing bowls and a whole lot of love to soothe and nourish the senses.
I take a holistic approach where I asses and treat the whole person, not only do I look at the skin but I take into consideration the clients lifestyle, food, how they move, sleep, rest and relax. I gently guide them in their health and wellness goals helping to bring more joy and balance into their life, so that they can live the healthiest happiest life possible.. with glowing radiant skin…
Why all natural and organic?
As the skin is the largest organ of the body, and highly absorbent, I believe it is essential to use safe natural, toxin-free and organic products that are naturally beautiful & effective without compromising your health.
I've always had a passion for natural beauty, nutrition and health, my first ever skincare I worked with (20+ yrs ago) was a natural based aromatherapy range. Then I worked in traditional beauty salons, spas and in training for skincare companies but my love for natural beauty was reignited 10 years ago in preparation for having a baby, then again after going through an illness. With increased awareness of my health, and a deeper understanding of natural beauty, I learnt how to really listen to my body and look after it. This lead me to further my studies in holistic health and integrative nutrition.
I’m super passionate about all things natural and organic and excited to help others make conscious healthy choices and live a happy low-tox life.
What is your favourite self care ritual (in your own personal life)?
I have many self-care rituals that I incorporate into my life, morning rituals (gratitude journaling, herbal tea, movement) to set up my day, daily rituals to support, and night time rituals such as spritzing my pillow to help me to sleep.. all the things I teach my clients, and constantly weave into my personal life.
This can be challenging at times while caring for a young family and the demands of a busy life, so for me its something I work on daily to maintain balance and look after my own health.
Looking after your self and learning to listen to your body, giving it what it needs is so vitally important not just for beauty but for your health, vitality and your precious life..
I believe when you honour your own needs, you are able to honour others…
Tell us a little about working while balancing motherhood:
This is a new challenge for me, I’ve been fortunate enough to be home with my little ones up until school, so I’m still working it out. But I find creating good daily and weekly rhythms, being organized, not taking on too much, flexibility and lots of selfcare and humour help.
What has been the greatest lesson you've learned since becoming a mum:
Gosh, there’s so many..
Children are great reflections of us and I think they teach us lessons.
Being in the present moment, patience and unconditional love like you’ve never felt before.
